Midgets football - grade 6
NOTES FROM THE COACH
09/21/08 - "If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'" Rudyard Kipling, "If"
This pretty much explains what happened this past Saturday when EVERY LAST ONE of the players on the Kearsarge Midget Football team "left it on the field!!!". In a tremendous effort to dash aside last week’s dismal performance, the 6th grade boys took control of their destiny by banding together as a team, shaking off last week's loss and rebounding up to the level the boys performed at on Saturday. It was astounding!! All the boys should be so very proud of themselves and each other.
Some changes on the offensive line seem to make things 'click'. Ben LaPrade had a stellar performance as snapper (center). Stepping into the center position is not easy and to do so with no snapping errors is outstanding! Our regular center, Jason DiGeronimo, was moved to a guard position. He along with Jack Cavallaro took care of business on the outside runs by firmly establishing control early in the game. New to the game, Nolan Quinn, was called in as an end and performed very well!!
The ENTIRE offensive line DOMINATED the field of play on Saturday! They owned the field. Pushing back the Hanover defense in decisive fashion to the point that the score in no way reflects how well the offensive line worked together!!! Just because they didn’t score any “T’s” this game doesn’t mean that Zach Beltz, Ryan Stanley and Drake vonKannwurff didn’t to anything! On the contrary! Their collective play kept the Hanover Defense guessing as they all executed their plays flawlessly.
The Wildcats started the day on defense and took the ball away with an interception by linebacker Jack Cavallaro giving our offense a start about mid-field. The offense took charge by pushing the Hanover team down the field in short order. The drive was capped off by a 24yd run by Ben Newbern. Bryson Barthol gave it all he could to squeak into the end zone for 2 more points. The defense, once again, showed everyone who came to play by consistently stopping the Hanover team from gaining much progress. Joe Merullo, David Lindh and Elliot Lukaitis controlled the “D” line while Michael Bechtold and Braxton Smith kept control of the outside!
Our offense again took charge and marched the length of the field and capped off that drive with a Jonathan Proulx run into the end zone. The subsequent point after did not work. But we were ahead 14-0.
Hanover rebounded to score their first and only touchdown. Our defense held strong and prevented Hanover from executing their 2-point conversion and we were still up by 8 points!
The remainder of the game was somewhat back-and-forth but because of our tough defense and our steady, rhythmic offense it kept Hanover on their heels and time ran out as we push our way down the field, threatening to score once again.
AWSOME job guys!!!!!!
Now it’s time to look forward to another tough team, Hartford, this Sunday at their house!!!!! Let’s get ready to rumble!!!!!

WHAT A SPECIAL THING IT IS TO WATCH SO MANY INDIVIDUALS WORK AS A TEAM!!!!!
And that is exactly what happened Sunday afternoon when the Kearsarge Wildcat 6th grade Midget football team hosted the John Stark Generals!
Our defense started the event by holding the Generals on 4th down giving our
offense possession at around on their 40yd line and in 3 very well executed
plays our offense, led by some fantastic blocking, plowed the way for Drake
“devil dog” von Kannewurff to get the ball into the end zone. Extra point
was made by Ben “wheels” Newbern as he went off the right side of the line
and into the end zone untouched!!!!
The defense once again held the Generals to a 3 and out situation and the
punt was fielded at the General’s 45yd line. In two plays, due to some
excellent blocking once again, Jonathan “moose” Proulx, took the ball
around the left end for a 40yd carry into the end zone. The extra point was
not successful and the Wildcats were up 14 to 0 at the end of the first
quarter.
Early in the 2nd quarter the Generals were successful in working their way
down the field and bending (but not breaking) our defense for their only
score and with a successful extra point they brought the score to 14 to 8.
We weren’t in the clear yet.
For the remainder of the 2nd and all of the 3rd quarters it was a fantastic
defensive battle!! ALL FOUR of our defense rotations worked as a team to
contain the Generals. There was some awesome tackles by Jack “money”
Cavallaro, Bryson “wolverine” Barthol, Joseph “Big Joe” Merullo, Mark
Wheeler and Nolan “mighty” Quinn along the front line. The front line was
supported by the Backfield with solid play and great open field “run downs”
by Jonathan “moose” Proulx, Braxton Smith and Ryan Stanley. Our “White”
defense had a critical 4th down stop and placed us in good field position!!
WAY TO GO BIG “D”!!!
On the offensive side we were held to a stalemate by the General’s defense.
When, late in the 4th quarter, “Big Joe” Merullo booted a 35yd punt assisted
with a Kearsarge bounce placed the Generals in tough field position. The
Generals were able to squeak out a first down but then the “Black Curse”
defense came in and shut the door on the Generals’ chances by forcing them
to punt. Bryson “Wolverine” Barthol was able to prevent a Generals’ roll
from returning the favor so we were able to start the drive with great field
position. Starting at about mid field the offense pulled it together and in
a wonderful sustained drive. The Wildcat Midgets made 2 first downs and
bounced back from our only penalty to, on the very next play, plow the way
for Jonathan “Moose” Proulx to cut back against the grain and make a 25yd
run into the end zone. Bryson “Wolverine” Barthol capped off the scoring by
following his linemen in a punishing extra point try that took extra effort
to make it to the end zone for 2!
What I saw on Sunday was a TEAM win that game, not just one or two stars!
There were 5 times we carried the ball across the end zone and four players
who did this. After reviewing the film, with the exception of some solid
tackles by Jack Cavallaro and Bryson Barthol, the vast majority of the stops
were a team effort that included the Defensive line, linebackers and the
corners/safeties. Because we have no “super strong” points we have fewer
weak points. Way to go Wildcats!!!
As a coach I have to say that the highlight of my day on Sunday was speaking
to one of the opposing coaches who wanted to convey that it was a pleasure
to play against us as we consistently show that we are a class organization
and that our boys on the field were full of sportsmanship and fair play.
The coach also stated that the boys played to the whistle, rolled off the
pile without giving any extra digs and were complete gentlemen. This,
parents, is the way it is suppose to be!!!! See, sometimes the “nice guys”
do finish first!!!! AWSOME JOB WILDCATS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am proud to be your
coach!!!!!
